How to Re-use your Grey Water
Here I am showing off my grey water system to the Katoomba Local News.
It really is the most simple thing. Water from the washing machine goes out the hose, down into the bath tub. The bathtub is filled with sand, rocks, soil and reeds.
These provide different levels of filtration-mechanical, and biological, before the (now clean) water flows out to my food garden. In summer when it's really hot I hardly have to water at all. Pressing 'go' on the washing machine takes care of my garden's water needs passively.
This particular filtration system works well in my context (house in the suburbs with 3 young messy kids so lots of washing, and a large food garden). If you have only a small garden or you live in an apartment, you might just need a bucket in the shower. It's important to design to your specific context.
Either way, we should be re-using the water from the house into the garden, especially in the dry months!
